Homemade Body Scrubs to Exfoliate and Moisturise your Skin

Well its that time of year that we all make resolutions to eat better and exercise, but what about improving our skincare? During the winter months our skin and lips take a beating from the cold and wind and central heating and therefore need a little bit of pampering too.

With this in mind, I jumped onto the coconut oil bandwagon a few years ago and must admit that it lived up to the hype! Sugar scrubs are a wonderful way to pamper yourself and I have been making my own face, body and lip scrubs for the last few years (Link to my Instagram post of December’s scrubs: https://www.instagram.com/p/Bqht_tJAbty/) and my skin feels amazingly soft, and moisturised. They are also inexpensive to make, and my friends, family and clients love them as gifts.

There is nothing wrong with the shop bought scrubs and I used to be addicted to LUSH’s Mint Julips Lip Scrub (£6.50 for 25g) and Ocean Salt Face and Body Scrub (£8.95 for 120g). Whilst they are lovely they are quite expensive. Its easy to make your own scrubs in less than 10 mins with a few ingredients that you probably already own and therefore will cost you pennies to make.

Read on to discover my current favourite homemade scrub and to download my top 5 recipes so that you can make them at home.

Vanilla & Cinnamon Brown Sugar Scrub

My current favourite scrub for my lips and body is the Vanilla and Cinnamon Brown Sugar Scrub. It smells divine and is almost good enough to eat. I love to lick my lips after using this scrub!

I use it on my lips 2-3 times a week and on my body once per week. When I make a large batch, if I have any left over I pop it into small pots and gift it to clients at my makeup appointments.

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup brown sugar

  • 1/2 cup coconut oil (melted)

  • 1 teaspoon real vanilla extract

  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Directions:

Place all ingredients in a bowl and mix together.  (I melt the coconut oil in the microwave for a few seconds first) It’s as easy as that! You can add more oil depending upon how loose you prefer your scrubs to be.

PURCHASING INGREDIENTS

I’m not going to list where I buy each item from and its cost as they mostly come out of my pantry which I stock up from my local supermarket.

I buy my Coconut oil from Aldi as its fairly inexpensive at I believe £2.99 for a large jar and lasts for a long time in the fridge too.

Essential oils also don’t have to be expensive, I buy mine from TK Maxx in their skincare department for approx. £1.99 per bottle.

You can also look online or look at other retailers for your ingredients.

HOW TO STORE YOUR BODY SCRUBS

I store the scrubs in Mason Jars in my bathrooms and in small air tight containers in my makeup kit.  If you don’t have any fancy jars yet, just keep your scrub in a Tupperware tub. Since this recipe doesn’t contain any preservatives, it’s best if it’s used within a couple of months however I find that this is never an issue!!!

HOW TO USE A BODY SCRUB:

You can use body scrubs in the bath or shower. To avoid damaging your skin, make sure your body is thoroughly wet and softened with warm water. You can use body scrubs in the bath or shower. To avoid damaging your skin, make sure your body is thoroughly wet and softened with warm water.

Apply scrub with your hands and cover your body with an adequate amount of body scrub. Use circular motions to massage it into your skin. I try to allow the scrub to melt into my skin for 2-3 mins before rinsing off with warm water.

Anything you apply on your skin after using a body scrub will be absorbed more rapidly. Applying a hydrating body lotion is the most important after-scrub product to help seal moisture in to your skin.
